This map shows the study area for the West Houston Trails Master Plan, a 113,000-acre area of West Houston within a 6-mile radius from the intersection of IH-10 and SH 6. Existing trails are shown in orange and proposed trails in purple. The proposed trails include those collected from previous trail plans of the City of Houston, Harris County, Harris County Flood Control District, and as many municipal utility districts ( MUDs) as reported their plans to the project team. At a community workshop held in October 2008, participants added more proposed trail ideas to maps of the study area. Then, a committee comprised of volunteer citizens and some agency staff helped identify a subset of the proposed trails that we are calling “spine trails”, shown on the map in a transparent gray color. A spine trail is defined as a trail with substantial length that has high potential to connect existing trails and destinations like parks, neighborhoods, workplaces, and shopping places. Since the spines are recommended for their strong likelihood to create an interconnected system, they are featured on the map with photos and key attributes.
