Blossoming Energy Corridor Famers Market Welcomes New Market Manager Kenzie Copeland

The Energy Corridor Farmers Market - celebrating almost a full year dishing up fresh, local farm and epicurean delights to West Houston - has a new market manager.

And the best part is that Mackenzie Copeland is dedicated to fostering sustainable agriculture, one of the Energy Corridor District's motivations for launching the market last April.

"I'm proud to be the new Energy Corridor Farmers Market manager," exclaims Copeland, who everyone calls Kenzie. "My studies were focused on sustainable agriculture, and I'm really passionate about urban farming, food deserts and food waste."

She is stepping into the shoes of the market's founding manager, Ellen Dortenzo, who helped recruit the diverse array of local farmers and prepared food artisans that welcome appreciative customers each Saturday, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in Grisby Square, 14710 Grisby Road.

Copeland, a Springfield, Illinois native, recently graduated from Arizona State University with a B.A. in Sustainability.

During a fellowship with Starbucks Global Responsibility Team in 2017, Copeland found ways to build resilience for coffee farmers facing problems brought on by climate change. For an internship with the nonprofit Rare - which promotes sustainable natural resource management - Copeland helped develop sustainable solutions for communities facing extreme poverty.

"I am excited to bring my passion for local foods to Energy Corridor's Farmers Market!" she says. "Come out Saturdays to the market and enjoy the fruits of local agriculture, tasty epicurean goodies and some fun community fellowship."
