Senior Captain Celebrates 38 Years with Houston Fire Department

Fire Chief Senior Captain Ken Dernehl proudly serves the Houston community. In April, he will celebrate 38 years of service with the Houston Fire Department. Since October 2004, Ken has worked at Fire Station 78 located at Memorial and Eldridge. Previously, he worked at Fire Station 69 located off Sam Houston Parkway and Briar Forest. Ken was promoted to Senior Captain in 1991. Ken first became a firefighter to help people in his community and he wanted a job where everyday was different. The most enjoyable parts of his job are knowing the difference he makes and the camaraderie of the people he works with. He likes being able to say that he truly enjoys what he does and looks forward to going to work every day. Outside of work, Ken enjoys the outdoors with hobbies including raising cattle and gardening.

Fire Station 78 has 11 firemen on duty at all times and starting this summer there will be an addition bringing the total to 12. The station has a pumper unit, a ladder truck and medic unit. The medic unit gets called out the most, and a usual day can see the pumper trucker leaving for two to ten calls. The location keeps them busy! Anyone is welcome to stop by the station

Thank you for your service and protecting our community all these years, Ken!
