Goodbye Joe, me gotta train, me oh my oh…
Runners, paddlers and cyclists of all ages and abilities will battle the rolling trails and sinuous water of Buffalo Bayou come Saturday, February 22 for the 2014 Bayou Adventure Race.
Registration is now open for race, run by the Bayou Preservation Association (BPA). The third annual race – which takes place along Buffalo Bayou from Terry Hershey Park to Dairy Ashford – is fast becoming a tradition for Houston residents who want to experience one of the defining recreational havens in town.
The BPA is packing in several events, offering an incredible array of adventure competition for both teams and individuals.
Three legs of adventure will mark this year’s signature Adventure Race. There will also be a 10K run, a half-marathon, a duathalon and a unique adventure race relay.
Teams and individuals competing in the main Adventure Race will test their running, paddling and biking abilities. First up: a 5K run along Buffalo Bayou’s tree-lined banks from Dairy Ashford to Highway 6. Leg two: as runners arrive at Highway 6, they will grab their kayaks, canoes or boards to paddle down the winding bayou for five more kilometers until reaching the takeout at Dairy Ashford. The finale: competitors will carry their boats up to the transition area, then jump on mountain bikes for a 10-15k race along the twisting, dirt trails of Terry Hershey Park.
An adventure race relay will feature three-member teams, each person competing for one section of the adventure race.
Finisher medals and dry-fit Bayou Adventure Race shirts will be guaranteed to registrants who sign up by February 8. Final online registration is February 21.
With its mission to “protect and restore the richness and diversity of our waterways," the Bayou Preservation Association features events like the Adventure Race to increase awareness about the region’s streams and bayous, while fostering watershed management, conservation and recreation for one of Houston's defining natural resources.
