Get Ready for Bike to Work Day May 18 with Free Social Ride and FrankenBike Events

Energy Corridor Bike to Work Day 2017 is May 18, and – to put your best wheel forward – The Energy Corridor District has organized free events to share the joys of bicycling among beginner and veteran cyclists alike.

The events are designed as a fun way to prepare for pedaling into work at the Energy Corridor from 6:30- 7:30 a.m. Thursday, May 18, during what has become one of the Houston’s most popular celebrations of National Bike Month. Launched by the League of American Bicyclists in 1956, National Bike Month showcases the benefits of biking, with events built to encourage more people to give it a try.

During the 13th Annual Energy Corridor Bike to Work Day, commuters originating from a variety of neighborhoods will trade their cars for bikes, converging at Terry Hershey Park Gazebo, 15342 Memorial Drive, for a sunrise celebration – complete with complimentary breakfast, music, giveaways, raffle prizes and comradery. You can RSVP today by clicking here.

Free social ride May 11
A relaxed, no-drop social ride led by BikeHouston will take bicyclists through scenic Terry Hershey Park and surrounding neighborhoods on Thursday, May 11. Riders will meet up at 6pm in front of Beans Cafe Coffeehouse, 1127 Eldridge Pkwy and roll out at 6:15pm.

Free basic tune-ups will be offered starting at 5:30 p.m. Kickin' Kombucha will provide free kombucha drinks for riders. For more, visit our Facebook event here.

FrankenBike Farmers Market Celebration May 13
The legendary FrankenBike Ultimate Bike Swap will come alive amidst the freshly picked fruits and vegetables during the Energy Corridor Farmers Market, 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at 14710 Grisby Rd., near the southeast corner of IH-10 and Hwy 6.

In fact, the FrankenBike Farmers Market will celebrate Bike to Work Month by shutting down Grasshopper Lane to motorists, freeing the lane for bicyclists and bicycling activities.

FrankenBike, a swap meet legendary among Texas bicyclists, will let Farmers Market patrons buy, sell or trade anything and everything bike. It’s a fine way to upgrade your ride, find parts and gear, or sell anything bike related.

At 10 a.m. Memorial Athletic Club will host a “Bike Stretch" demo complete with handouts of the stretches, plus guest passes for a free spinning class.

Once your bike is in shape and your body stretched, it’s time to give bicycling into work a go during Energy Corridor Bike to Work Day, May 18.
