The Houston Energy Corridor is celebrating Bike to Work Day on Thursday, May 17! In addition to helping the environment, biking to work is a great way to switch up your daily routine and escape the stresses of driving in Houston traffic. Join us for the Bike to Work Day Kick-off event, Thursday, May 17 from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. at the gazebo in Terry Hershey Park for refreshments, giveaways and other cool prizes.
“I encourage others to try biking to work. My commute is actually quicker even though my driving route is a shorter distance, plus I don’t have the stress of driving in traffic,” comments bike commuter Benjamin Schupack. Another benefit of biking is exercise. Benjamin adds, “I don’t have to think twice about eating ice cream or enjoying a cookie with lunch!”
We encourage cyclists to take advantage of helpful tools such as Google Maps to determine the safest ways to get to work. Google Maps offers a bicycling component illustrating the best bike routes, which is continually updated.
In addition to the physical benefits, bike commuter Marc Watson enjoys the financial benefit, “I save $8.00 a day in gasoline when I ride my bike to work, rather than drive.”
Energy Corridor companies are also joining in by making it easy for employees to bike to work. For example, BP America offers bicycle parking, showers and lockers on site for participating employees.
